Every carton of Miah Farms eggs carries a QR code that names the farmers behind it — not a lot number, not a code no one can Google. Real people, real villages, real welfare scores.

Trace-to-cohort, not trace-to-egg. That's the industry standard — refined with human faces.

The batch model

A single smallholder rarely fills a full tray on any given day. So every carton bears a batch code — a small cohort of farmers whose eggs were graded, aggregated, and packed together in the same window. When you scan the QR, you meet everyone in the cohort.

Every vaccination the flock received — who gave it, on what date, with what dose. Verifiable.

The standards we align with

Batch-level traceability is not a shortcut — it's the international standard. Individual-egg tracing is a marketing fantasy no commercial food system in the world executes.

What sets Miah Farms apart isn't the batch model — everyone in food uses it. What sets us apart is that our batches show named people with welfare scores, not opaque lot numbers.

Common questions

Why don't you trace one specific egg to one specific farmer?

Because no commercial food system on Earth does that — not organic-certified brands in Europe, not farmers' markets, not fair-trade coffee. It would require every egg to be individually stamped and tracked from lay to sale, which is operationally impossible at scale and provides no additional food-safety value.

What we do guarantee: every egg in a Miah Farms tray came from one of a small, named group of farmers (usually 2-3) whose identities, flocks, welfare scores, and vaccination records are all published on the trace page. If a recall is ever needed, we can pinpoint the exact cohort in minutes.

What happens if there's a food-safety concern with a batch?

Every batch code links back to the flocks and farmers who contributed to it. If a concern is raised — an outbreak, a spoilage complaint, a customer report — we can identify:

  • Every carton with that batch code that has been shipped or sold
  • Every farmer whose flock contributed to it
  • Every flock those farmers own that shares risk
  • Every customer who bought from that batch (via order history)

The system has a built-in recall workflow that auto-notifies affected customers by SMS and email within minutes. That's what "trace-to-cohort" enables that lot-number-only systems can't match.

How is the welfare score calculated?

A 0-100 score computed from five weighted dimensions of the flock:

  • Stocking density (25%) — birds per m² of housing area
  • Daily-photo recency (25%) — evidence of active care
  • Antibiotic-free status (15%) — no antibiotics in the last 30 days
  • Mortality rate (20%) — lifetime deaths vs intake
  • Vaccination compliance (15%) — done vs expected for the flock's age

Band A (90+) = Excellent. Band B (75-89) = Good. Band C (60-74) = Acceptable. Band D (below 60) = Needs work. Recomputed weekly. Every score you see is live data, not a marketing number.

How is this different from organic or free-range certification?

Certification tells you what a farm claims to be. Traceability tells you who is actually behind your food and how they're doing today.

Organic certification is a snapshot audit that happens once a year and issues a badge. Miah Farms' traceability is a continuous, live record — every vaccination, every mortality event, every welfare score update flows into the public trace page as it happens. Customers see the reality of the farm, not an audit outcome from six months ago.

Both models can coexist. We could pursue organic certification for a subset of our farmers as an add-on — but our traceability stands on its own.

Can I verify a Miah Farms egg is authentic?

Yes. Every carton bears a unique QR code that links to a live trace page at miahfarms.com/trace/. The trace page shows farmers, flocks, welfare scores, feed logs, and vaccination records — all pulled live from our operational database. If someone tried to fake a Miah Farms carton, the QR would either 404 or resolve to a batch code that doesn't match the visible product.

You can also verify by dialling our USSD code from any feature phone in Uganda and entering the batch code manually.

Who owns the farm and welfare data?

The farmers do. Miah Farms is a project of Enazen Global Consults Ltd, registered with a Data Protection & Privacy certificate from NITA-U. Farmer profiles are populated with each farmer's consent. Individual farmers can request to withdraw their public profile at any time — their historical batches would then show their initials + district only, with no photo or name.
